Laura C. Wiegand M.D.
Dr. Laura Wiegand is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, bringing exceptional expertise and a compassionate, patient-centered approach to South Hills Orthopaedic Surgery Associates. A Pittsburgh native who grew up in Mt. Lebanon, Dr. Wiegand returned home after completion of her training to serve the community she loves, combining world-class training with a deep understanding of local patients’ needs.
Dr. Wiegand earned her Bachelor’s degree in Cognitive Neuroscience from Harvard University before completing her medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She pursued rigorous orthopedic surgery residency training at the prestigious Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. This comprehensive training has equipped her with advanced skills in both surgical and non-surgical treatment of knee and shoulder conditions.
Her clinical expertise encompasses the full spectrum of sports medicine, including knee ligament injuries, ACL tears, meniscus tears, MCL injuries, rotator cuff pathology, shoulder dislocations, labral tears, biceps tendon injuries, tendonitis, and fractures. Fellowship trained in advanced arthroscopic techniques, Dr. Wiegand performs both minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures and open surgeries, including ligament reconstruction, meniscus surgery, rotator cuff repair, labral repair, biceps tenodesis, and fracture fixation.
What truly sets Dr. Wiegand apart is her unique perspective as both a former Division I athlete and one of the few female orthopedic sports medicine surgeons in the region. This background enables her to connect deeply with athletes of all levels, understanding their goals for optimal health and performance. Notably, she was the first female orthopedic sports medicine fellow to serve as an assistant team physician for the New England Patriots and while it was an exciting learning experience, she has always remained a Steelers fan at heart. Her experience providing sideline coverage for professional organizations, including the Patriots and Boston Bruins, has given her invaluable insight into treating sports injuries at the highest level. She brings this expertise to every patient, from weekend warriors to competitive athletes.
Dr. Wiegand is particularly passionate about advancing women’s sports medicine and providing specialized care for female athletes. As a female orthopedic surgeon, she offers unique opportunities to connect with women patients who may prefer a physician who understands their specific needs and concerns.
Her philosophy of care centers on providing high-quality, compassionate, personalized treatment tailored to each patient’s individual needs. Dr. Wiegand believes in partnering with her patients throughout their entire journey, from diagnosis through treatment and recovery, offering comprehensive education, support, and treatment recommendations. She treats patients of all ages and activity levels, helping them return to the activities they love with reduced pain and improved function.
Dr. Wiegand is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. She maintains active memberships in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Quigley Society for the Advancement of Sports Medicine.
Outside of her practice, Dr. Wiegand lives in the South Hills of Pittsburgh with her husband and three children. When she’s not caring for patients, she enjoys swimming, cycling, walking, reading, traveling, and spending quality time with her family. The family’s newest shared adventure is learning to fly fish together.
Whether you’re a competitive athlete looking to return to your sport or someone seeking to regain an active lifestyle, Dr. Wiegand combines exceptional surgical skill with genuine compassion to help you achieve your goals and get back to doing what you love.
